Bare Essence - Perfume developed and merchandised by wealthy widow Tyger Hayes (Genie Francis) as she struggled in the conglomerate world of the Perfume Industry (filled with sex, corruption and power) on the prime time soap opera BARE ESSENCE/NBC/1983. When Tyger first sampled her fledgling perfume (a.k.a. "Ma Femme") developed by DeHavilland Fragrances in Grosse, France, she said "Sexy smelly Good...Its so basic, so primitive. It's breathtaking, romantic and personal. It's got to be...Bare Essence." With a successful prototype, Tyger established Kellerco Perfume Company.
Beach, The - Cologne invented by Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards)
after swimming with the Polar Bear Club on episode No. 31 "The Pez
Dispenser" of the sitcom SEINFELD/NBC/1990-98. As Kramer said "You
spray it on. It smells like you just came home from the beach." His
friend Jerry Seinfeld mocked the idea. "You think people are going to
pay to smell like dead fish and seaweed? That's why they shower."
On episode No. 51 "The Pick" Kramer confronted Calvin Klein (played by
Nicholas Hormann) about perfume plagiarism when Calvin unveiled his own
scent called "Ocean" soon after Kramer pitched a similar idea to one of
Calvin's executives. On episode No. 144 "The Nap" Kramer invented a
mattress filled with sand that felt "like sleeping on a beach."
B.B.O.
- Beyond Body Odor (aka "The Beast"). This term was coined on episode
No. 59 "The Smelly Car" by George Costanza (Jason Alexander) on the
sitcom SEINFELD/NBC/1990-98 who commented on an atrocious smell left in
Jerry Seinfeld's car by a restaurant parking valet. After smelling the
odor, Jerry suggested the formation of a "B.O. Squad" who would search
out and scrub down smelly people.
Chanel No.5 -
Pricey perfume product (0-an-ounce) advertised over the years on
television and print ads. In 1994, the Arnell Group created an
innovated TV spot entitled "Marilyn" starring actress Carole Bouquet
sitting amidst the crowd of theatergoers. When she splashed on the
enticing fragrance of Chanel No. 5, the actress morphed (via modern
video technology) into the image of Marilyn Monroe who began to sing "I
Wanna Be Loved By You." The people in the theater were favorably
impressed at the transformation. In 1980, when Chanel No. 5 was selling
at 0-an-ounce, the Doyle, Dane Bernbach ad agency created a surreal,
sexually charged commercial entitled "Share the Fantasy." The
commercial showed a woman disrobing by a blue swimming pool at a
chateau in the South of France while a muscular male swam towards her
reclining, waiting body. A female voice then announced "I am made of
blue sky and golden light, and I will feel this way forever" quickly
followed by a male voice softly saying "Share the Fantasy."
Forever
Krystle - Fragrance inspired by the prime time soap
DYNASTY/ABC/1981-89. John Forsythe and Linda Evans plugged the perfume
named Forever Krystle based on their Blake Carrington and Krystle
Carrington characters. Selling for .75 a bottle, this tantalizing TV
fragrance created by Yves St. Laurent (he also made a men's cologne
called Carrington) sold more than 6.5 million dollars in 1985. As Linda
Evans said in the commercials "A woman's scent is her identity." Joan
Collins who played the wicked bitch Alexis Carrington hawked her own
fragrance appropriately enough called Scoundrel. Other celebrities
hopped onto the merchandising bandwagon with their own fragrances.
Elizabeth Taylor pushed Passion at 0.00 a bottle and later White
Diamonds; Cher unveiled Uninhibited; Mikhail Baryshnikov manufactured
Misha for women; and Julio Iglesia introduced Only in May of 1989.
Elvira
(Cassandra Peterson) the vampish horror show hostess hawked a perfume
called Evil Her perfume was developed without animal testing and
contained no animal ingredients. The profits were donated to People for
Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). In 1991, Victoria Principal (of
DALLAS fame) followed suit with an animal free line of cosmetics called
Principal Secret. A tongue-in-cheek article in TV Guide (2/10-16/1996)
reviewed such fragrances as MP (Melrose Place), Mariel by H20 Plus
(Central Park West), Amphibia, Pour Homme, Femme, et Frog (Kermit the
Muppet). In the fall of 1998 Miss Piggy introduced her own fragrance
called Moi. No animals were used in the testing of this perfume, just
lawyers.
Hey You - Perfume created by Oldbat
perfumes for a skit on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. As the ad said "Not all
women are looking for Mr. Right. Sometimes they just want a little
company...Just one whiff does the trick. Hey You for the special
someone you never expect to see again. Hey You, the perfume for the
one-night stand." Jungle Gardenia - Perfume made by Tuvache and
given away by Bob Barker as a consolation prize to the losers on the
daytime quiz show TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES/CBS/NBC/1950-58.
MMMM
- The favorite perfume of Thalia Menninger (Tuesday Weld), the girl of
Dobie Gillis' dreams on the sitcom THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE
GILLIS/CBS/1959-63. "MMMM" perfume cost an ounce but unfortunately,
Dobie Gillis (Dwayne Hickman), the son of a grocery store owner didn't
have the bucks to buy the perfume for his favorite babe. To his dismay,
Dobie's competition.
the spoiled millionaire Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. (Steve Franken) could easily purchase Thalia her fragrance.
Mr.
Musk - Aftershave used by Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler) on
the sitcom HAPPY DAYS/ABC/1974-84. "I wanna tell ya," Fonzie once said,
"a few splashes at night, chicks turn off the lights...it is a killer!"
On the same episode, the Fonz developed an allergy to girls and sneezed
whenever one got to close to him.
Fortunately,
before running away to a mountaintop hermitage, Fonzie discovered that
the combination of his Mr. Musk aftershave with the cheap .00 perfume
that his dates wore was the caused of all his problems. When the two
combined, a chemical reaction gave off a faint smoke that made him
sneeze. "I always wondered where the smoke came from...I always thought
it was friction," said Fonzie Thrilled with the discovery, he yelled
"The Fonz is cured!" and the neighborhood was soon filled with the
cries of thankful young woman echoing the good news.
Moustache
- The favorite cologne (that drove the girls wild) worn by professional
photographer and confirmed bachelor Bob Collins on the sitcom LOVE THAT
BOB/NBC/CBS/1955-59. One of Bob's beautiful but marriage-minded models,
Shirley Swanson (Joi Lansing) battled back by wearing the irresistible
perfume scent called "Bachelor's Doom." Only You - On the episode
"Only You" of the rural drama NORTHERN EXPOSURE/CBS/1990-95, town
deejay Chris Stevens (John Corbett) suffered from a rare but periodic
affliction.
It
seems the men in his family emitted a seductive sexual scent which
caused all women to lust after him. Anticipating the yearly pheromone
fest, Chris settled back for the onslaught. What he wasn't ready for
was optometrist Dr. Irene Rondenet (Caitlin Clarke) who was passing
through the town of Cicely, but not throwing passes at him. Intriqued
at her indifference, Chris ignored all the women who wanted him and
pursued the only one who didn't. In the meantime Dr. Joel Fleischman
(Rob Morrow) began a study of Chris' fascinating biological phenomena.
TRIVIA NOTE: On the sitcom SEINFELD/NBC/1990-98 Cosmo Kramer (Michael
Richards) possessed an animal attraction known as "Kavorka" that seemed
to work only on Latvian Orthodox nuns.
Perfume
Pretty Barbie - In 1988, the makers of the Barbie doll introduced this
fragrance for children to wear. A separate line of dusting powders,
hand and body lotion, and shampoo were sold separately. "Perfume Pretty
Barbie" was created by Barbie's longtime beau, Ken (a la DYNASTY'S
Blake Carrington) as a symbol of his love.
Revenge
- Love fragrance featured on the sci-fi series LOIS & CLARK: THE
NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN/ABC/1993-97. Just a one percent solution of
this animal-based scent broke down a person's inhibitions. When a
jealous scientist (Morgan Fairchild) discovered millionaire
industrialist Lex Luthor (John Shea) preferred reporter Lois Lane (Teri
Hatcher) over her, she sprayed Revenge on all of the employees of The
Daily Planet newspaper. The resulting love orgy caused chaos in the
newsroom, a slew of sexual harassment lawsuits and Lois to fall head
over heels in love with Clark Kent (Dean Cain). Fortunately, the
perfume's effects wore off after 48 hours.

Do's And Don'ts for Fragrance Skin type will also change the affect in the way a fragrance smells on a person. Fragrance wearers with an oilier skin should note that fragrances interact with the oils in the skin to create a more intense scent. Dry skin does not retain fragrance as long as oily skin, which means that the wearer will need to re-apply the fragrance more often. |
